At least 16 shops were burnt in a devastating fire that broke out at a kitchen market in Uttara Sector-11 in the early hours of Tuesday.

Rakibul Hasan, duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters said the fire occurred at about 2 am at a kitchen market in Uttara.

On information, nine firefighting units from Uttara, Tongi, Kurmitola, and Pallabi fire stations rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control at about 2.45 am, he added.

No casualties were reported. But, as many as 16 shops made of tin, wood, and bamboo were burnt down before extinguishing the fire, said the duty officer.  The cause of the fire and the extent of damage can be confirmed after an investigation, said duty officer Rakibul Hasan.

Traders said they hardly managed to get anything out. Witnesses said the market had various types of shops, including groceries, furniture, and upholstery stores. Almost all of the shops were destroyed by the fire.

Locals tried to extinguish the fire initially, but it soon went out of control before the fire service came and contained it.
