15th anniversary of Aug 21 grenade attack observed in Rajshahi

The 15th anniversary of the gruesome grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) anti-terrorism rally in Dhaka on August 21 in 2004 was observed in Rajshahi city on Wednesday in a befitting manner as elsewhere in the district, reports BSS.

Different political parties and their front organizations observed the day paying homage to the Martyred of August 21 who sacrificed their lives for establishing terrorism, militancy-free Bangladesh. The day’s programmes included hoisting the national and black flags at half-mast atop all party offices, placing wreaths at the portraits of leaders and workers of AL including Ivy Rahman who sacrificed their lives on August 21, at 10 am at the respective party offices of AL, Qurankhwani, Milad Mahfil and discussion meetings.

In observance of the day, city unit of Bangladesh Awami League placed wreaths on the portraits of Martyred of August 21 at Swadhinota Crossing in the city this morning. City unit president and Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Vice-president Shaheen Akhter Rainy and General Secretary Dablu Sarker were present on the occasion. Afterwards, the unit held a discussion meeting and doa mahfil at the party office with Khairuzzaman Liton, who was present near the Awami League meeting on that day, in the chair.

Recalling his memory on the occasion, Mayor Liton said the horrible grenade attack was carried out at an anti-terrorism rally of Awami League (AL) at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital Dhaka on August 21 in 2004.24 people including the then Mahila AL president and wife of late president Zillur Rahman were killed and over 500 others injured in the attack and many of them became crippled for life.
