A mobile court in a raid on Monday convicted and sentenced fifteen persons to one-year simple imprisonment (SI) each to suffer one year’s RI each and fined two others taka 5,000 each on charge of catching mother hilsa defying the ban from the river Jamuna under Shivalaya upazila of the district Manikganj.
The convicted persons were identified as Uzzal Sheikh, Mohammod Shamim Kha, Md. Hyder Sheikh, Md. Shafique Molla, Md. Abu Taleb Molla, Milon Mondol, Altaf Hossain, Habu Sheikh, Akabbor Sheikh, Mohammod Abul, Ahammed Ali, Md. Ramjan Sheikh, Akter Hossain, Hafiz Uddin and Latif Sheikh of district.
The mobile court led by Shibalaya Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and executive Magistrate Md. Zakir Hossain, pronounced the verdict on Monday afternoon.
Md. Zakir Hossain, Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate along with Fisheries department of Shivalaya upazila launched the night long drive on Sunday in different point of the river Padma and Jamuna to arrest those catching hilsa defying the government ban.
At the time mobile team arrested eighteen fishermen and seized 1,00,000 meters of current net and one maund of mother hilsa, sources said.
District Fisheries Officer Moniruzzaman said, the government has imposed a ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of hilsa from October 9 to October 30. Sources said, the catching of hilsa fish and fry has gone unabated in the Padma and Jamuna river in different areas of Manikganj district in recent times.
