15 die in Brahmanbaria trawler capsize

A passenger boat capsized at Laiska Bill in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila leaving at least 15 people dead and dozens missing on Friday. 

The passenger boat with at least 70 passengers on board collided with a sand-laden trawler. Police and fire service personnel went to the spot and carried out rescue operations. Local people also took part in the rescue operation.

According to local sources, a boat left Champaknagar Ghat in Vijayanagar Upazila for Anandabazar Ghat in Sadar Upazila. The boat collided with a sand-laden trawler after reaching the Laiskar Bill area. 

The number of missing people could not be known immediately.

Locals also said the boat had more than one hundred passengers on board. While some of them have been able to swim, many were still missing till filing the report. 

“The trawler left with many passengers. We were going to Brahmanbaria from Champaknagar by the trawler. Our trawler sank when it collided with a sand-laden trawler on its way. Although I was able to swim to the shore, many of us have not been found yet,” said a passenger of the capsized trawler.

Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Officer in Charge (OC) Md. Emranul Islam has confirmed the incident of the boat sinking.
