A total of 14 ship-breaking yards in Chittagong have so far received green shipyard certificates by following the Hong Kong Convention while there are a few more in the pipeline, said Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain.
He said the government will provide all necessary support to convert ship recycling yards of the shipbreaking industry into green shipyards.
The Adviser said this while addressing an event after inspecting the ship recycling activities of KSRM Ship Breaking Yard in Sitakunda, Chittagong on Saturday afternoon.
"All yards that have not yet been able to follow the rules and regulations according to international standards will be provided all necessary support by the government, as the government is committed to preventing environmental pollution and maintaining international standards in the ship-breaking industry", Sakhawat added.
He informed that 3 more ships are being purchased for Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) in a bid to increasing the capacity in the shipping sector.
After inspecting the ship breaking yard, he visited Bangladesh Military Academy.
Sitakunda Upazila Executive Officer Md. Fakhrul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police of Sitakunda Circle Labib Abdullah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sitakunda Model Police Station Md. Mojibur Rahman, Acting Secretary of Ship Recycling Board Md. Nazmul, Managing Director of the factory Mohammad Karim Uddin and others were also present on the occasion.
