14-party alliance for imposing ban on Jamaat

The ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance on Monday announced that it will ban Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Chhatra Shibir in the country. 

The decision was taken in a meeting of the alliance chaired by AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her residence Ganabhaban, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters after the meeting.

“The alliance has agreed to ban Jamaat-Shibir politics on the charges of killing common people and destroying state assets by creating various issues and carrying out militant attacks,” Quader said.

Rashed Khan Menon, a central leader of the alliance and president of the Workers Party, said, “We unanimously decided to ban Jamaat-Shibir. Now it is the responsibility of the government to implement it.”

Other central leaders of the alliance, including Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haq Inu, were also present at the meeting.

It should be mentioned that students and job seekers launched a movement demanding reforms in the quota system in the government jobs on July 1. But, cadres of BNP and Jamaat infiltrated into the movement and launched sabotage activities through violence like arson attacks and vandalism in the capital and across the country.

They set fire to many government offices and important establishments like metro rail, BTV, Data Centre and Narsingdi jail. They also set fire to hundreds of vehicles and damaged hundreds other vehicles.

In the circumstance, personnel from different law-enforcement agencies went into action to bring the4 situation.
