14 deaths, 1041 new cases in a day

Both new infections and deaths from the pandemic virus continue to rise in Bangladesh with the latest update shows 14 more die of Covid-19 and 1041 fresh cases of coornavirus are detected in a day.

Additional Director General for Health Prof Nasima Sultana in the daily briefing on Thursday said they had tested 7392 samples at 41 RT-PCR laboratories across the country in the last 24 hours till 8am of Thursday.

With that the number of total officially confirmed cases from the virus surged to 18,863 with 283 deaths.
Bangladesh first reported the coronavirus on March 8 and the death on March 18. The World Health Organisation declared the virus pandemic on March 11.

As of May 14, Prof Nasima said the recovery rate against the number of infections is 19.10 percent while the death rate is 1.5 percent.

Most of the patients are taking treatment staying at home.
Of the new deceased, five in their 50s, five in their 40s, one in his 30s, one in his 20s and two in their 70s. Of them, 11 are male and three female.

Nine of them were in Dhaka city which is the hotspot of the disease and five from Chattogram division.
Of the new cases, 754 were found from 4588 tests in Dhaka city while 287 cases detected from 2804 tests outside Dhaka city.
A total of 3792 positive cases with 35 deaths were reported from April 26 to May 2. The number was 4980 with 39 fatalities from May 3 to May 9 and 7093 cases with 69 deaths from May 10 to 14, she said analyzing the overall trend of the patients in the past three weeks.

She said a total of 151,930 samples have so far been tested in 41 PCR labs - 20 are in Dhaka city and 21 outside the capital city.

“On May 13, three more PCR labs were included in the list of testing facilities, raising the total number to 41. Of these, two are in Dhaka city and another is outside Dhaka,” she said.

The three labs have been set up at Sheikh Hasina Medical College in Jamalpur and Ibn Sina Hospital and Prava Health in Dhaka.

She said a process is going on to install 13 more PCR labs in the country to widen the testing facilities.
