13 killed in Cumilla, Natore, Habiganj road crashes

Seven passengers of an auto-rickshaw were killed and another person was inured as the three-wheeler was hit by a Dhaka-bound train on a level crossing under Burichang upazila in Cumilla on Tuesday morning.

On the other hand, four people were killed in two separate road crashes in Natore, while two others were killed in a road crash in Habiganj. 

The incident of Cumilla took place at about 10am at an unauthorised railway crossing in Kalikapur area under Burichang upazila. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Burichong Police Station Azizul Haque confirmed the matter. 

Some of the deceased were identified as Rafiq Mia, Lutfa Begum, Sanu Mia, Safarjan Begum, Hosne Ara and Shaju Mia, hailed from Bakshimul village under the upazila.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Railway Police, Cumilla Golam Mostofa said that the incident occurred when the inter-city train "Subarna Express" hit the auto-rickshaw, full of passengers, in the area as it was passing the spot at the same time, leaving four passengers dead on the spot and injuring others.

Two passengers died on the way to a nearby hospital, he said.

The collision left the three-wheeler completely crushed and in pieces, while the victims' bodies were severely mutilated, OC Azizul said. 

The rural railway crossing had no gateman to put up the signal for the vehicles coming from either side. 

Railway police have been informed and will handle the legal proceedings once they arrive, said Azizul.

A four-member investigation team, led by Assistant Executive Engineer Nazmul Hasan, was formed to prove the accident, the SI added.

In Lalpur upazila of Natore, a truck carrying betel nuts hit a battery-run van coming from opposite direction in Kadimchhilan area on Pabna-Natore regional highway around 6:30am, leaving the van's driver Alfu Thandar, of Dhanaidah village in the upazila, dead on the spot, and truck's driver Mostaqin Hossain, of Kachua upazila of Bagerhat, and his helper critically injured, said Md Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge of Banpara Highway police Station.

The injured were rescued by fire service personnel and admitted to Banpara Patwari Hospital, where truck driver Mostaqin succumbed to his injuries, the OC added.

In Gurudaspur upazila, a motorcyclist and his pillion were left dead on the spot when an unidentified vehicle hit them in Kachikata area on Banpara-Hatikumrul highway around 3:25pm on Tuesday, said OC Ismail.

The deceased were identified as Motaleb Hossain, 45, and Shah Alam, 47, both from Pabna's Chatmohar upazila.

Locals informed police after seeing the bodies. However, no one could say when or how the accident happened. Later, police and fire service personnel took the bodies to Banpara Highway Police Outpost, he added.
