The 12th parliament will go into its maiden session on January 30.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday convened the session, exercising his power bestowed upon him as per clause (1) of article 72 of the constitution, said a press release of the Parliament Secretariat.
The session, also the first of 2024, will start at 3:00pm on that day and the President will address the first day of the session to go by a Constitutional provision.
Ruling Awami League won a massive victory in the 12th parliamentary elections, securing 223 seats which helped the party to form the new government led by Sheikh Hasina for the fifth term.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already been elected as the Leader of the House and she will lead the House for the fourth term in a row. The 12th parliamentary elections were held on January 7 amid boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance while Jatiya Party (Ershad) got 11 seats and independent candidates, mostly rebels of the AL, got 62 seats.
As per the law, the President will address the first day of first session of any parliament and first day session of New Year.
As per the rules of the procedures, the Speaker and deputy Speaker should be elected at the first sitting after a general election.
Lawmakers directly elect the Speaker and deputy Speaker of the House. The eligibility to become the Speaker and deputy Speaker of the House is they should be lawmakers.
The incumbent Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been elected lawmaker from Rangpur-6.
The Awami League Parliamentary Party has already nominated incumbent Speaker as the Speaker of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad.
With this nomination, Chaudhury is going to be elected as the Speaker for the record fourth consecutive term.
After the election, the Speaker will adopt a condolence motion and the house will run a discussion over the motion.
After a brief recess, the House will begin again and the President will deliver his speech.
The first day’s business will end soon after the end of the President’s speech.
