111 child marriages happen in two upazilas in 3 months

At least 40 women were oppressed through domestic violence and 111 girls were given in early marriage at nine unions of Alamdanga and Sadar upazila in Chuadanga during the last three months. 

Protyasha, an NGO, disclosed the information at a virtual meeting on the topic which was presided over by Siddiqur Rahman, former principal of Chuadanga Government College. 

The NGO conducted a survey at five unions of sadar upazila and four unions of Alamdanga upazila of the district. The unions are Padmobila, Sangkarchandra, Mominpur, Begumpur, Alukdia in sadar upazila and Chitla, Khadimpur, Gangni, Baradi in Alamdanga upazila. 

After completing survey the organisation reported that 40 women were oppressed and 111 girls were given in early marriage in the unions of the district. 

According to survey of Protyasha, 6 early marriages were held at Padmabila union, 13 at Sangkarchandra union, 22 at Mominpur union, 12 at Begumpur union, 32 at Alukdia union in sadarupazila, 8 at Chitla union, 08 at Khadimpur union, 3 at Gangni union, 7 at Baradi union in Alamddanga upazila. 

The survey stated that 10 women were oppressed in different ways in the family at Sangkarchandra union, 2 at Mominpur union, 4 at Begumpur union, 5 at Alukdia union in sadar upazila, 8 at Chitla union, 2 at Khadimpur union, 6 at Gangni union, 3 at Baradi union in Alamdanga upazila. 

A girl of Alukdia union in sadar upazila said that at the survey period she was a student of Class Eight. Her parents gave her in marriage. Now she is a housewife in a family. 

A housewife of Gangni union stated that at the survey time she was given in marriage 5 years back, now the members of her husband family used slang language not to paying dowry. 

Belal Hossain, Executive Director of Protyasha told the Bangladesh Post that they had been working against domestic violence of women and early marriage. 

On July 8 a discussion meeting on prevention of domestic violence and early marriage was held under the auspices of Protyasa. About 32 representatives of different organizations and public representatives participated in the online meeting. The survey report was presented by him on the day, he added.
