110 police peacekeepers leave for Mali UN mission

A team of Bangladesh Police left Dhaka to join the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali by a chartered aircraft of the United Nations (UN), reports BSS.

The 110-member strong contingent left for Bamako in Mali on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the Police Headquarters of Friday. Apart from the stipulated forces working with different peacekeeping missions under the UN and Bangladesh Formed Police Unit-2 (BANFPU-2, Rotation) team will work to establish peace in volatile MINUSMA, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali, the statement said.

Additional Inspector General of Police (Addi-IGP) Biswas Afzal Hossain, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police SM Ruhul Amin and officers of UN desk were present at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to see off the peacekeeping team, it added. Since its commencement to serve in different UN Missions, Bangladesh Police has now been the forth Police Contributing Country (PCC) in the world with remarkable commitments of police personnel to the UN Mandate.

It all began in 1989 when it left behind its glorious chapter by participating in the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG) in an African state named Namibia – ever since, success stories have flourished the fame with adventurous total number of 19,366 personnel in 22 UN Missions to date.
