A court here on Monday sentenced 11 persons to different terms of imprisonment for trading yaba tablets through a fishing trawler FV Mohchen Awliya in the Bay of Bengal in 2017.
Among the convicts eight sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and the other three sentenced to five years imprisonment each, the court sources said.
Chattogram 4th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shoriful Alam Bhuiyan pronounced the judgement.
Confirming the judgement, bench assistant Omar Fuad said the court expressed surprise that the owner of the trawler was not made an accused in the case and ordered the IGP to take action against the three investigating officers.
The investigating officers are- former inspector (Investigation) of Patenga Thana Gazi Fauzul Azim, former Assistant Superintendent of Police of RAB-7 Jalal Uddin and former Additional Superintendent of Police of PBI Chattogram Md. Moin Uddin.
According to prosecution, a team of RAB arrested eight people with 20 lakh yaba tablets from FV Mohchen Awliya trawler owned by one Nezam Uddin, in the Bay of Bengal on April 16, 2017.
A case was filed with Patenga Thana against the alleged drug traders on the next day.
Six of the accused gave confessional statements before the court.
PBI submitted a charge-sheet against 17 people in April 2018.
The court framed charges on March 10, 2020 against the 11 accused.
The court announced the verdict after examining a total of 14 prosecution witnesses out of 22.
