11 die in Netrokona trawler capsize

At least 11 people including women and children drowned and 11 others were missing in a collision between two trawlers in a river in Kamlakanda upazila of Netrokona on Wednesday morning.

Deputy Commissioner of Netrakona Kazi Mohamamd Abdur Rahman, who was now at the place of occurrence to monitor the rescue operation, told media that the incident took place when a passenger boat carrying nearly 35 passengers collided with another sand laden boat in the upazila’s Borokhapon area around 9:30am at the Gomai River.

The passenger boat capsized after collided head on with a sand laden boat which was coming from opposite direction.

Seven persons managed to swim ashore and over a dozen other went missing.

Locals and two separate rescue teams of police and fire service departments started rescue operation immediately after the boat mishap.

Meanwhile, the rescue operation recovered eleven bodies.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

A shade of sorrow surrounded the river side area when the locals and rescue teams recovered the bodies.

Earlier on 5th August, 17 people drowned after a trawler capsized in Rajali Kanda haor under Madan upazila of Netrakona.
