The government has a plan to give more than one crore families 10 kilograms of rice each under VGF in the coming holy month of Ramadan.
Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said this to journalists at his secretariat office in the capital on Thursday.
The minister said, “Currently, under OMS, a foodstuff distribution program is going on in cities, districts, upazilas and municipalities among low income people. At this time, 5 kg of rice is being given at the rate of Tk 30 per kg and 3 kg of flour at the rate of Tk 24 per kg.”
The Food Minister said that more than one crore families get 5 kg of rice and 3 kg of flour in OMS throughout the year. So people will not face any troublesome situation for rice in Ramadan at least. For this reason, the thought of giving Atap rice imported from Myanmar is going on, he mentioned.
The food minister said that the month of Ramadan is ahead. The Food Ministry mainly distributes rice through rationing, Kabikha (Food for Work), TR and OMS programs. Since independence during this fiscal year 2022-23, the highest disbursement system is taking place. Rice and flour are being distributed continuously through 2500 dealers.
He said, “Currently private import is open, but the import is less than before as there is plenty of rice in the country now. Government stocks are also plentiful. Our distribution as well as stock is the highest since independence. At present we have 20,33,928 tonnes of rice stock.
