A total of 108 seats in different departments for undergraduate courses at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet remained unfilled even after calling eight times including the public notice of allotment in the 2021-22 academic session.

Among the 108, 102 seats remain vacant in the science faculty; four in faculty commerce, and two in faculty of humanities, Professor Md. Masum, the director of the computer information center of the university told reporters.

However, the university authorities believe that the vacant seats would be fulfilled by enrolling students from the next rounds of allotment.

The university authorities called 4,176 to 8,000 waiting students through the announcement of a “Public Notice”.

A total of 8000 students have been called to science faculty, 559 to commerce faculty, and 1319 to the humanities faculty.

It is widely recognised that Shahjalal University is the country’s first science and technology university.

This university is unique in numerous ways.

Besides, the SUST ranked first in the cluster admission test system's list of universities.

Despite this, a number of senior teachers preferring not to be named stated that the quality of education and research at the university is declining in comparison to the past.

On the other hand, the SUST increased its admission fees for the undergraduate programmes for the 2021-22 session.

The admission fee was increased to Tk 15,000, which was Tk 8,060 last year.

The students on Sunday staged demonstrations on the campus protesting a hike in the fee for admission application form for the first year honours courses under 2021-22 academic session.
