Birth and death registration of the entire population will be ensured by 2024. The government is working towards that goal.

LGRD minister Md Tajul Islam made the remarks at an online conference on Friday from his residence on Mintu Road.

The minister said that as per the announcement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Decade (2015-2024) in the first ministerial conference, 100 pc birth registration and 50 pc death registration have been promised by 2024.

Emphasising on the commitment made by the Bangladesh government at the conference, Md Tajul Islam said that much progress has already been made in this regard and the present government is working under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to reach the target within the stipulated time.

Mentioning that Bangladesh started its journey in 2014 with the aim of implementing CRVS, the minister said that intensive work is being done in collaboration with UNICEF, WHO and other development partners to implement the targets set by Birth and Death Registration, Regional Action Framework and SDG.

He also called upon international and development partners to come forward for the implementation of CRVS.

“Birth certificates of all ages are required for various important activities including passport, marriage registration, death certificate, admission in educational institutions, and land registration. To that end, the Registrar General, Birth and Death Registration Office has coordinated with other supporting authorities to ensure birth and death registration from the national level to the local level,” said the minister.

He added that since 2010, online birth and death registration has been easily started online with the initiative of local government. Many innovative steps have been taken to speed up this activity, he added.

The minister said, “Online birth registration is being carried out in all city corporations, municipalities, union councils, cantonment boards and registrars' offices including embassies of different countries. As good citizens, it is our duty to register the birth as soon as the child is born.”

He further said that a child or an adult can get many benefits if the birth is registered. In addition, birth and death registration information is very important for formulating the socio-economic development plan of the country as well as identifying every person precisely, he added.
