10000 free wifi hotspots at unions

To reach internet connectivity to the doorsteps of union level people, the authority concerned is going to establish 10000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL) has taken up a project to establish these hotspots at the union level.
According to BTCL information, it was learned that the company has its own fiber optic cable connection in the 1216 unions in the country. Now, the authority concerned wants to have at least eight WiFi hotspots in each of these unions.

BTCL managing director, Rafiqul Motin, in this regard informed the media that they have established at least 9728 hotspots across 1216 unions in the country.

He was exchanging views about the BTCL service through Facebook, live from his office recently, where he briefly discussed the project of establishing 10000 wifi hotspots at the union level.

“We have submitted a project to the government regarding the free Wi-Fi hotspot setup, we hope soon we will get the approval from the higher authority to implement the project”, he added.

While talking about the distribution and maintenance, Motin said, “We will keep the service free for the first couple of days. Later, we will hand over the service after getting a reliable partner”.

Earlier, BTCL introduced free wifi in 146 schools and colleges in 23 districts of the country which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister’s information and communication technology advisor, Sajeeb Wazed, on January 12 last.

Periodically, BTCL is introducing free wifi in the country’s 587 educational institutes at a cost of Tk 45 crore.
Of these, there are 143 educational institutions in Dhaka, 35 in Mymensingh, 107 in Chattogram, 45 in Barishal, 83 in Khulna, 85 in Rajshahi, 56 in Rangpur and 33 in Sylhet division.

Each educational institute will get free internet capacity up to 10 MBPS for free. All these educational institutes will enjoy free internet for one year.
