Girder fall on car in Uttara

10 remanded for questioning

Ten people, including the crane driver, have been remanded in a case filed in connection with the death of five people after the girder of the BRT project fell on a private car in Uttara. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahabub Ahmed granted this remand on Friday. 

The investigating officer of the case, Inspector Mohammad Yasin Gazi of Uttara (West) Police Station, applied for a 10-day remand for questioning each of the three accused. The accused are crane driver Al Amin, assistant Rakib Hossain and safety engineer Zulfikar Ali of the contracting company CGGC. 

After the hearing, the court granted four days’ remand for each of them. Police sought seven days’ remand for the remaining seven accused, but the court granted remand for two days to each of them. 

The seven accused are -- the company that supplies heavy equipment to the project Ifs Con owner Md Iftekhar Hossain, Head of Operation Md Azharul Islam Mithu, Traffic man Afroz and Rubel of Four Brothers Guard Service in charge, procurement officer of CGGC Manjurul Islam, who is responsible for ensuring safety and supplying heavy equipment to the project area, manager of crane supplier Build Trade Company Tofazzal Hossain and administrative officer Ruhul Amin Mridha. 

In the remand application, it was said that during the initial interrogation, those arrested persons have given some important information about their involvement in this tragic accident. Everyone needs to be remanded for questioning to ascertain the real cause of the accident and who else was involved. 

In the remand application, it was further stated that the accused fled immediately after the accident despite being engaged in important duties. 

It should be noted that these 10 people were arrested in separate raids from Dhaka, Gazipur, Sirajganj and Bagerhat last Wednesday.
