A ten-month old baby recovered and returned home healthy after being infected by coronavirus in Chottogram. The mother also survived unaffected while taking care.

For ten days in a row, the mother, Runa Khan, has been caring for her child, Shariar Alam Abir, affected by coronavirus at a hospital.

The youngest corona patient in the country so far has miraculously recovered and returned home healthy. “This is a great news of achievement of treatment of COVID-19 infection in Bangladesh,” said an attending doctor.

The child, from Chandonaish upazila of Chattogram district, was being treated at the Chattogram General Hospital.

Doctors said that the child was treated with antibiotics along with constant oxygen supply while he was given a diet rich in protein.

On Saturday, the baby was released from the hospital after being declared free from corona infection and returned home.

On April 21, Abir was diagnosed with corona positive at the corona test lab in Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID), Chattogram.

The child was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The next morning, he was shifted to the Chottogram General Hospital, where a specialized corona unit had been allocated for treatment of coronavirus infection. At this time the mother of the child was also kept beside the child but with safety precaution.

Dr Abdur Rab Masum, in-charge of Corona Unit of Chattogram General Hospital said, “Managing the baby in care while keeping the mother free from infection was very sensitive issue. During the treatment, the mother regularly breastfed her baby.”

“During the treatment in the hospital, we took all possible measures to protect the mother,” said Dr Abdur Rab Masum, mentioning that the special care was indeed a very tough job.

As per the rules, the mother and child were released from the hospital after being tested negative for corona two times.

The mother was specially trained on how to manage the baby in a hospital by wearing special masks and the protective dresses. Even she was instructed what to do while breastfeeding.

The baby was corona positive at the time of admission to the corona unit of General Hospital but his mother was corona negative.

Although she was not corona positive but had been exposed to 39 other corona patients staying closely at the unit taking great risk. Wife of an expatriate, had no attendants and was handling the situation alone from her family.

After leaving the Hospital, Runa Khan told Bangladesh Post, “By the grace of Almighty Allah, I am returning home with a healthy child. I am grateful to everyone who have helped me.”
