At least 10 journalists sustained injuries in a brutal attack by local extortionists in front of Dream Holiday Park at Madhabdi in Narsingdi on Monday evening.
The journalists are the members of the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB).
Two of the miscreants were arrested in this connection.
The incident took place when the journalists were returning from the spot at the end of the Annual Family Day programme of the CRAB.
According to witnesses and police, local extortionists demanded money from the vehicle carrying the journalists.
Witnesses said, as the CRAB members protested the extortion attempt, the extortionists numbering from 15 to 20 miscreants swooped on them with locally made weapons.
Journalist Foyez, who sustained serious injuries, was taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital under police protection.
Other injured journalists, including Shahidul Islam Shahed, Mohsin, Sakhawat Kawsar, and CRAB staff member Lal, received primary treatment at local clinics.
Narsingdi Superintendent of Police Md Abdullah-Al-Faruk said on information of the incident, police rushed to the spot and detained two among the attackers.
“Two attackers have been arrested from the scene and brought to the police station. Legal action is being taken in this regard,” he said.
Meanwhile, CRAB leaders condemned the attack and demanded the immediate arrest of all those involved.
They said such a brutal assault on journalists for protesting extortion is unacceptable and called for exemplary punishment to ensure the safety of media professionals.
