10 dead in Sunamganj boat capsize

A tragic boat capsize at Korcha Bill in the Kaliyakuta Haor under Sunamganj district on Tuesday night left at least nine people dead, including six children and three women, and one child missing. 

A pall of gloom descended on the locality due to mournful loss of lives in the mishap that occurred when the passengers of the boat were going to attend a wedding ceremony at Peruya village in the district, said locals.

The bodies of five more people, who went missing in the boat capsize in Kaliyakuta Haor in Dirai upazila on Tuesday, were recovered on Wednesday, raising the death toll to ten.

The deceased were identified as Shanta Moni, 3, daughter of Jasad, Rahitunnesa, 35, wife of Arju Ali, Asad, 5, son of Afzal Hossain and Karima Bibi, 78, wife of Nasibulla of Masimpur village while the identity of another one could not yet be known.

Earlier on Tuesday night, police recovered the bodies of four people after the capsize. They were Shamim, 2,  son of Babul, Abir, 3, son of Badrul of Masimpur village, Azam, 2, son of Firoz Ali of Perua village and Sohan, son of Afzal Hossain of Noagram village. All hailed from Derai upazila.

Police and local sources said on Tuesday evening, Aminul along with his 31 relatives and family members set out from Machimpur village in an open engine-operated boat to attend the wedding ceremony of one Feroj Ali at Peruya village amid rough weather. At one stage of their journey, the boat sank at Korchai Bill when strong wind hit it at 8pm. 

Belayet Hossain, additional superintendent of police, said ten people, including six children, went missing after the boat capsized while 21 managed to swim ashore. “Locals recovered the bodies of four children on Tuesday night and bodies of another five children were recovered on Wednesday morning,” said, KM Nojrul Islam, officer in charge of Derai police station.
