10,000 climate migrants will get facilities in slums

Around 10,000 climate migrants will get clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene support in ten slum areas of Rajshahi city. To this end, 51 resilient and context-specific facilities will be installed and renovated besides installation and renovation of 28 community toilets.

Apart from this, 104 community people will be imparted caretaker training for operation and maintenance of the hardware options.  The development activities will be implemented on behalf of a three-year project titled "Composite Actions for Climate Migrants in Urban Slums (CACMUS)" to be implemented by WaterAid Bangladesh and Village Education Resource Centre (VERC).

These were revealed at the inception meeting of the project held at the mconference hall of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) on Tuesday.

Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzza­man Liton addressed the meeting as chief guest with WaterAid Director Hossain Adib in the chair Manager of the project Manzoor-Al-Islam gave an illustration of the project along with its aims, objectives and implementation strategy during his multimedia presentation.

He said the project is intended to establish replicable community-managed water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, facilitate better economic opportunities for the beneficiaries, and link climate migrants with microfinance services and pro-poor WASH services provided by the city mauthorities.

In his remarks, Mayor Liton said integrated efforts of all concerned have become crucial to eradicate the urban poverty caused by the adverse impact of mclimate change as the climate-induced poverty has been escalating gradually in the urban areas.

Rural low-income people with their recurrent disaster exposures are migrating to urban areas. These newcomers face a high employment crisis in the city.
