The body of a recently SSC-passed student was recovered from the waters of the Railway Lake in Chandpur town on Saturday night.

Local residents found the body floating near Muktijoddha Road around 10 PM.

The dead was identifies as Al-Amin alias Rimon, 17. He had appeared for this year’s SSC examination from Chandpur Goni Model High School. He was the son of Ramzan Ali Prodhania, a local businessman and general secretary of Rajrajeshwar Union unit of Jubo Dal. The family lived in Mominpara area of Chandpur town.

Following the incident, police detained seven of Al-Amin's classmates for questioning at Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station.

According to police and locals, Al-Amin had left home earlier in the afternoon and was last seen around the lake area near the ‘Ongikar’ sculpture at Hasan Ali High School field, chatting with several classmates. Around 9 PM, he was seen floating in the lake.

Locals said overhearing his classmates saying that Al-Amin had accepted a dare from another friend named Rimon to swim across the lake for a bet of BDT 500. Shortly afterward, the incident occurred.

Al-Amin's father, Ramzan Ali Prodhania, rushed to the hospital with his wife Farzana Akter and other relatives around 11:30 PM after hearing the news. Locals had recovered Al-Amin from the lake and rushed him to Chandpur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Ramzan Ali alleged that unidentified individuals had called his son from in front of Bhuiyan residence and stabbed him near the lake. In a desperate attempt to save himself, Al-Amin jumped into the water but ultimately drowned.

He demanded a proper investigation and justice for his son’s death.

Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Bahar Mia stated that police responded to the scene and later went to the hospital. "We have spoken with the victim’s family. An investigation is underway to determine the true cause of the incident. Necessary legal steps are being processed," he added.
