Target fixed to produce over 3.76 lakh tonnes T Aman rice in Jhenaidah

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has fixed a target to produce more than 3.76 lakh tonnes of rice on 104,490 hectares of land in Jhenaidah district during the current Aman season.

Production on each hectare of land has been targeted for 3.6 tonnes on an average, said a source related to the office of the deputy director (DD) of the department of agricultural extension (DAE) in Jhenaidah Khamarbari.

Abdur Rauf, a farmer at Maharajpur village and Shamsul Alam of Kalicharanpur in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila said they had prepared their seedbeds more than one time which was almost damaged by incessant rainfall in last two months. The beds were prepared for the second or third time that has increased the sapling production cost partially. It will affect the farmers financially. Ignoring the limitations, they have been farming T Aman in the season as the farmers were reaping better in yield and price both, they said.

The farmers said the rainfall will save their maximum irrigation cost and reduce the production cost on an average. It was also encouraging the farmers, they said.

DAE in Jhenaidah Khamarbari sources said they had set target to produce 376,093 tonnes of rice in the current T Aman season on a total of 104,490 hectares of land. Till Wednesday the farmers of Jhenaidah Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, bordering Moheshpur, Shailkupa and Harinakundu had brought 78,614 hectares under the farming.

Duration of the transplanting is likely to be continued till August. They were expecting exceed the target in time. The farmers of the district had produced 376,327 tonnes of rice in the last season where they had received 3.60 tonnes on each hectare, the DAE sources said.

Arifuzzaman, upazila agricultural officer at Shailkupa in Jhenaidah when contacted said the DAE has been providing technical assistances to the farmers and supplying agriculture machineries at subsidized rates to boost their production

Sasti Chndra Roy, deputy director of the DAE in Jhenaidah Khamarbari when contacted said the farmers have been producing more than three crops a year with their hard labour, modern technology, improved seeds and balanced fertilizer all along.

To make the farming profitable, the DAE field level officials have been advised to stand by the farmers for twenty-four hours, the deputy director said.
