The much-anticipated new Superman film, directed by James Gunn, has finally arrived in cinemas, marking the beginning of a fresh cinematic universe for DC Comics. Starring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, this film offers a very different flavour compared to its predecessors.

Unlike the earlier serious-toned DC films, Gunn’s Superman is packed with quirky sci-fi elements, bizarre characters, and a sense of fun. From flying dogs to robotic Superman assistants and eccentric villains, the film feels like a colourful, fast-paced comic book brought to life.

Interestingly, the story doesn’t start with Superman’s childhood on Krypton or his upbringing in Kansas. Instead, viewers meet him three years into his superhero career. He is already in love with Lois Lane and has enemies like Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult. The film also introduces a group of other superheroes called the Justice Gang, including Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr Terrific.

Though comic book fans are likely to enjoy the film’s wacky ideas and references, critics note that the film often feels rushed. Huge moments like monster attacks and universe-hopping pass by too quickly, leaving little emotional impact.

David Corenswet, as Superman, delivers a charismatic performance but lacks moments showing the character’s kind and noble side. Critics felt that the film’s fast pace sacrificed character-building scenes, making the Man of Steel appear more hot-headed than heroic.

Still, the film’s humour and bold visual effects offer something new for superhero cinema lovers. Whether it will successfully launch DC’s new universe remains to be seen, but it certainly delivers a wild, unpredictable ride for audiences.
