DGHS issues 4 guidelines to prevent heatstroke

Severe heat wave is sweeping over several north, north-eastern and southern districts, mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over three divisions and other parts of the country, said met office forecast for the next 24 hours begins from 9am on Tuesday.

“Severe heat wave is sweeping over the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jashore, Chuadanga and Kushtia; Mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Dhaka, Rangpur and Barishal divisions and rest parts of Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the districts of Mymensingh, Moulvibazar and Rangamati and it may continue”, it said.

Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Sylhet division with hails at isolated places.

Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country.

Trough of low lies over West Bengal and adjoining area.

Country’s maximum temperature on Monday was recorded 40.6degree Celsius jointly at Khulna, Jashore and Chuadanga and today minimum temperature was recorded 21.4 degree Celsius jointly at Tetulia and Dimla.

Day temperature may rise slightly and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country. Due to increase of moisture incursion, the discomfort may persist.

Meanwhile, a  man died in the capital’s Gulistan on Tuesday after succumbing to the punishing heat that continues to plague the country.

According to Wari Police Station SI Shah Alam, 56-year-old Alamgir Shikder collapsed on the road due to a heatstroke after alighting from a bus around 11am.

“Eyewitnesses said he collapsed near Gulistan Toll Plaza after getting off from the bus. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead,” said SI Alam.

“Alamgir used to work as a binder at a printing press in Dhaka and had left for work in the morning. He leaves behind three sons and a daughter,” he added.

Alamgir’s body was handed over to his family without an autopsy at their request.

The stifling humidity and extreme heat in mid-April have made life difficult for the public and even put lives in danger. Temperatures are expected to remain scorching in the coming days as Bangladesh grapples with one of the worst heat waves the nation has seen.

At least six heat-related deaths have been reported since Apr 20. On Monday, a rickshaw puller died on the streets of the capital after suffering from a heatstroke.

Public health experts have advised people to stay off streets unless necessary to minimise the health risks due to the extreme heat. In addition to drinking plenty of water and wearing light-coloured clothes, people have also been advised to carry an umbrella or a cap for protection.

In the circumstance, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday issued four-point guidelines to prevent heatstroke as a heatwave severe heat wave is sweeping over the country.

The guidelines are as follows: (1) Stay away from intense heat, take rest under shadow, (2) Drink plenty of safe water avoiding street food and drinking of deadly water borne-diseases including Hepatitis A, E, diarrhoea, taking bathe more than once if necessary (3) In hot weather, wear loose, thin and light colored clothes, avoid dark colored clothes if possible and (4) Visit doctors, if any symptoms such as stopping of sweating, nausea, severe headache, increased body temperature, decreased appetite, burning sensation, convulsions and fainting are shown during this hot weather.
