A remand prisoner, Shamir Khan (25), has died while in custody at the Brahmanbaria District Jail. According to prison authorities, he died at the district hospital on Friday morning after suffering from fever and related complications. However, his family alleges he was subjected to police torture during remand, which led to his deteriorating health and eventual death.

Shamir, from Darjisar village under Ashuganj Police Station, was an accused in a robbery and murder case filed at Bijoynagar Police Station. He reportedly fell ill on Thursday morning and was first treated at the prison hospital. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Brahmanbaria District Hospital around 4:45 pm and was admitted. He died there the following morning.

According to the death certificate, he died from heart and respiratory failure due to fever and cold-related complications.

Shamir’s mother, Monowara Begum, and wife, Sathi Akter, alleged that he was tortured in police custody by SI Mahbub Alam Sarkar to force a confession. They claim Shamir told them during jail visits that his body ached severely and he had not received proper medical care.

The body is currently at the hospital morgue awaiting post-mortem.
