Onion price on the rise, garlic falls in Jhenaidah market

Prices of onion have increased while garlic prices fallen in Jhenaidah markets since last week. 

Abdur Rahman of village Manaharpur and Ananata Das of village Ashurhat when contacted at Shailkupa weekly market, the largest onion and garlic producing upazila of Jhenaidah, said they had sole each maund onion at Tk 2,200 to 2,300 a week back, was selling at Tk 2,700 to 2,800 on Tuesday. Each maund of garlic was sold at Tk 2,700 to 2,800 as against Tk 4,000 to 4,100. 

Farmer Amulya Kumar Biswas of village Srikol in neighboring Sripur upazila in Magura when contacted at Langalbandh weekly market in the bordering area of Shailkua in Jhenaidah and Sripur upazila Magura said there were a good demand of onion and least demand of garlic in the largest wholesale market in Daulatpur of Khulna. The said the onion price was benefitting them, while the garlic price had slapped on their fates for an unknown reason in a week. 

Ramjan Ali and Tapan Sikder from Daulatpur market in Khulna while purchasing onion and garlic at Shailkupa market said their wholesale traders from Khulna had advices them to show least interest in purchasing garlic, while encouraging them to purchase the onion as much as they could do. They assumed that further rise in onion price and another shake in falling of the garlic in the market for next weeks.

Another wholesaler of from Khulna when asked at the market on the day denying anonymity to this correspondent said he was assuming the least import of onion from the neighboring country might be the reason behind price hike of the spicy crop in recent times.
