A murder accused named Shariful Islam (22), escaped from the Dhaka 3rd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on Thursday after assaulting a police officer while being taken to the lockup from the courtroom.
Son of Shafik Ahmed from Haripur village, Nawabganj Police Station, Dinajpur, Shariful, is a charge-sheeted accused in the murder case of Jisan Hossain (14) under Khilgaon Police Station. The case is currently at the witness deposition stage.
The escape occurred around 11:30 AM when Shariful attacked police constable Md Shahidullah, who was escorting him from the courtroom to the holding cell, according to SI Ripon, in-charge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court lockup.
ADC Main Uddin of DMP’s prosecution division said, “Shariful was handcuffed but managed to loosen the cuffs using a metallic object, then struck the constable and fled.”
He added that legal action is underway, and Kotwali Police Station has been notified to launch a manhunt to recapture the fugitive. Further charges are being prepared against Shariful.
