Muradnagar rape: HC summons SP on failure to submit progress report

The High Court on Tuesday summoned the superintendent of Cumilla Police to appear before court on August 12 and explain his role in the failire to submit the progress report implementing court order in connection with the rape of 25-year-old woman in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla district.

The HC bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Sayed Jahed Mansur passed the order after hearing a writ petition.

On June 29, the HC asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to remove the video footage of the rape of the 25-year-old woman from the social networking site Facebook within 24 hours.

It also asked the authorities to ensure safety and medical treatment of the woman.

The HC also asked the authorities concerned to submit a progress report of the case and court order within July 14.

The woman was raped at Ramchandrapur Panchkitta village in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla on the night of June 26.

According to police and locals, after the incident Fazar Ali was caught and beaten by local people but he managed to flee.

Shortly after the incident, some people who were present at the scene filmed the victim and circulated the video on social media platforms, prompting outrage and concern over the violation of decency and privacy.

Upon receiving the news, a team from Muradnagar Police Station rushed to the spot.

Based on a written complaint filed by the victim, a case was lodged under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Police arrested the prime accused in the rape case involving an expatriate's wife in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla from Dhaka’s Sutrapur area on June 29.
