Meeting held over ban on student politics in DU halls

The Provost Standing Committee of Dhaka University (DU) held a meeting today (9 August) to discuss the ongoing demand for a ban on student politics in residential halls.

The meeting, which began on Saturday noon and ended around 6pm, took place amid growing campus unrest, our correspondent reports.

A hall provost, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the university authorities will begin holding meetings with student organisations from Saturday to discuss the matter further.

The discussion follows protests by general students last night, demanding a complete ban on student politics in halls after the announcement of the Chhatra Dal committees in DU residential facilities.

Meanwhile, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan today reaffirmed that the decision taken on 17 July last year to keep residential halls free from student politics remains in effect.

"Student politics in the halls is prohibited according to the 'framework of 17 July 2024'," he said in front of his residence at around 2:45am after students staged protests.
