A Barguna court has sentenced a man to death for beating his six-month pregnant wife in 2003, over her failure to provide dowry.
Barguna Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal and District Judge Begum Lailatul Ferdous announced the verdict on Monday.
The convict is Md Kamal Hossain, 45, a resident of Uttar Kakchira village under Bamna upazila in the district.
According to case details, Kamal married Jahanara Begum, daughter of Moslem Uddin from Mathbaria upazila in Pirojpur district in 1998. They had one daughter.
In 2003, Jahanara became pregnant again. On the morning of September 30, 2003, Kamal and his family members demanded Jahanara to bring TK 50,000 as dowry from her father's house.
When she refused, Kamal kicked her in the lower abdomen and severely beat her. Relatives, informed of the incident, rushed her to Bamna Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead.
Confirming the information, Barguna Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Public Prosecutor Ronjuara Sipu said, "The plaintiff filed a case against nine individuals. The investigation found no involvement of eight of them."
