A former chairman of Narayanganj Bandar Upazila and his followers blockaded the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Narayanganj district on Monday afternoon, demanding the arrest of the culprits who assaulted the chairman.
The protest led by Ataur Rahman Mukul and it held at Madanpur area of Bandar upazila in the district. Leaders and activists from a faction of Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP along with those from Bandar Upazila and various unions participated in the protest.
The highway remained blocked for nearly an hour, causing long traffic jams on both lanes. Upon receiving news, police assured them of arresting the culprits, prompting the activists to lift the blockade at 5 PM.
From the blockade program, Metropolitan BNP leaders issued an ultimatum to arrest the culprits within the next 48 hours, threatening to block the highway again otherwise.
Regarding the matter, Kanchpur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Wahid Morshed said, "Followers of the former chairman blocked the highway in protest of the attack on him. This caused traffic congestion on both lanes of the highway. We talked to them and moved them from the road. Currently, traffic movement is normal."
Earlier, former chairman Mukul and his associates, accompanied by some police personnel went to the Hariharipur 412 MW power plant in Bandar upazila after securing a tender for repair work and worker recruitment.
