A journalist was allegedly assaulted in an attempt to kill him over a kabaddi match in Tangail.

The incident took place around 5:30pm on Friday in Char Pakulla village of Tangail Sadar upazila. The victim, Sujan Mia, an ATN Bangla cameraman, filed a written complaint with Tangail Sadar Police Station later that night.

According to the complaint, a kabaddi match was underway on Friday afternoon in Char Pakulla village, Jala. While covering the event, Sujan Mia was verbally abused with obscene language by the referee’s son, Roman. When Sujan protested, Roman punched him repeatedly in the face.

Several others then joined in, beating Sujan indiscriminately with bamboo sticks on various parts of his body. During the assault, the attackers also snatched the gold chain from his neck. Locals later helped Sujan reach Tangail Sadar Hospital, where he received primary treatment.

Recounting the incident, Sujan Mia said: “While covering the match, I was suddenly beaten with the intent to kill me. The attack seemed premeditated. At one point, they threatened to kill me and dump my body at the game. I am feeling unsafe after the incident. I demand the arrest of those responsible.”

Tangail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvir Ahmed confirmed: “We have received the complaint. Action is being taken after investigation.”
