Illegal goods worth Tk 300cr seized at Maheshpur border in 7 months

The 58 Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Maheshpur has achieved remarkable success in combating smuggling and human trafficking along the Indian border in Jhenaidah and Chuadanga. Over the past seven months, they have seized illegal drugs, gold, and weapons worth approximately Tk 300 crore and detained 2,168 individuals for various cross-border offences.

Among those detained, 1,138 were caught attempting to enter India illegally, while 979 were apprehended entering Bangladesh. This includes 18 Indian nationals. Additionally, 33 suspected human traffickers, including one Indian named Shankar Adhikari, were arrested.

According to BGB officials, from March to July 2025, they seized 7,920 bottles of foreign liquor, 9,517 bottles of Phensedyl, 68 

kg of cannabis, over 45,000 yaba pills, 5.11 kg of cocaine, and 6.405 kg of heroin—valued at Tk 241.3 million.

In five separate operations, 3.654 kg of gold worth Tk 50 million was recovered, along with two foreign pistols, four local one-shooter guns, and 14 rounds of ammunition. Joint task forces also seized Indian garments worth Tk 9 million and imposed fines totalling Tk 260,000.

Strict surveillance prevented cattle and hide smuggling during Eid-ul-Azha.
