UNB, Rangpur: A housewife was reportedly tied to a tree and tortured overnight by her husband in Kalyani of Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur district on Friday night.
The incident came to light on Sunday as a video footage of the incident went viral on social networking sites.
Shaheen Mirza Sumon, member of local union parishad, said Shefali Begum, a resident of Nijtaj village married Nazrul Islam of the upazila in 2014. Nazrul was married before.
Nazrul along with his first wife Amena Begum used to torture her since her marriage.
Failing to bear the inhuman torture, Shefali took shelter at her relatives for the past one year.
On Friday night, Shefali went to Nazrul’s house and upon her arrival, Nazrul said he divorced her.
When Shefali wanted to see the divorce paper, Nazrul along with Amena tied her to a tree and unleashed torture on her.
Local people later rescued her and she was sent to her relative’s again.
Contacted, officer-in-charge of Mahiganj Police Station, Abdul Quddus, said no complaint was lodged in this connection and legal steps will be taken only after getting a complaint.
As a result, no one was arrested in this connection, said police.
