The ‘July Reawakening Programme 2025’, scheduled to be held on July 24 in all primary schools across the country to commemorate those killed and injured in the 24 July mass uprising, has been postponed.
The decision came in the wake of a tragic plane crash at Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara on Sunday, which claimed the lives of several students and left a deep impact on guardians and people across the country.
The information was confirmed in a letter signed by Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Assistant Director of the Directorate of Primary Education.
The letter was sent to all district and upazila primary education officers on July 21, stating that the programme had been suspended due to the tragic accident.
The decision will remain effective until further instructions are given, and a new date for the programme will be announced in due course.
On July 17, the Directorate of Primary Education issued a circular to hold simultaneous programmes on July 24 in all government primary schools across the country. An allocation of 2,500 taka was provided for each school to organize the event.
The Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education, Abu Noor Md. Shamsuzzaman, said, “We have 65,569 government primary schools across the country.” Following the directorate’s instructions, the school authorities will spend the allocated funds and ensure student participation in the event.
He said that during the mass uprising in July-August last year, several children were killed, and this initiative has been taken to commemorate them.
He added, “Several initiatives have been taken to honor the spirit of July’s contribution. Among them is holding a programme on July 24 simultaneously in all government primary schools, featuring singing, poetry recitation, dance performances, and essay competitions with student participation.”
He also said that to cherish the spirit of the July uprising, the directorate has undertaken several activities. Among them is organizing, on July 24, simultaneous competitions in singing, poetry, dance, and essay writing involving children in every primary school across the country. However, the Director General said that in light of the Milestone tragedy, these events have been temporarily suspended.
