A close aide of former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was arrested on Tuesday in a case over shooting protesters during July movement in 2024.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) members arrested Md. Khorshed Alam, 48, from the capital’s Sukrabad area, said Jasim Uddin Khan, Special Superintendent of Police (Media), CID.

Tipped off, a special team of CID Dhaka Metro unit conducted a drive around 12:05 am and arrested Khorshed who had been on the run since the fall of the Awami League government.

Earlier, on May 15, another close associate of the former mayor, SM Kamal Haidar, was arrested in connection with the same case.

On August 4, 2024, a protester, Abdullah Siddiq, was shot dead.

A murder case was filed with Dhanmondi Police Station and it is currently under investigation by CID’s Dhaka Metro South Division.

Investigators reportedly found that Khorshed Alam was present at the scene and played a leading role in the attack.

During initial interrogation, he reportedly admitted to participating in the assault on demonstrators.

He was produced before a court with a seven-day remand plea.
