Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, who was arrested in a treason and election manipulation case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka, has given a confessional statement before the court.

On Tuesday, following two rounds of remand totaling eight days, Nurul Huda was produced before the court. He voluntarily agreed to give a statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The investigating officer submitted a petition to record his statement, which was granted and recorded by Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Ziadur Rahman. Afterward, Huda was sent to jail.

The case was filed by BNP on June 22, accusing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former chief election commissioners, including Huda, of rigging three general elections during the Awami League government. That same night, an angry mob apprehended Huda from his residence in Uttara, verbally and physically assaulting him. Some individuals live-streamed the incident on Facebook. He was shown arrested in the BNP case the following day and placed on a four-day remand.

On June 25, additional charges of treason, fraud, and embezzlement were added to the case.

Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, four former inspectors general of police (IGP), several former election commissioners, and former chiefs of SB, NSI and DGFI have been accused in the case.

The case alleges that during the three elections, the accused orchestrated mass arrests of BNP activists using fabricated charges, enforced disappearances, abductions, torture, and killings to prevent political participation. Despite being part of a constitutional body, they violated the Constitution, election codes, and abused their positions as government officials to manipulate voting processes. They allegedly declared candidates as winners even without public mandate, constituting punishable offenses under the law.
