As winter creeps closer, the country’s northern region has been shrouded by fog and morning dews over the last few days. Thick fog is forcing vehicles to keep their headlights on in the morning, too.
The winter looks set to arrive with its full force when the south wind and deep depression will weaken. The local administration and affluent people should come forward with blankets in advance particulay for the low-income people living in the northern ans southwestern parts of the country.
We have noticed that the people of north, northeast, northwest, and mid districts bear the brunt of the cold wave every year. The interim government must ask the local administration to stay prepared and start distributing blankets among the people in advance as the fog and morning dews over the last few days, giving off telltale signs that winter is creeping ever closer. Normal life is being disrupted across the north districts due to fog and dropping temperature with the approach of winter. Farmers, labourers and daily wage earners will be the hard hit as they need to go out for work amid dense fog and chilly weather.
From midnight to morning, vast areas remain blanketed in dense fog, disrupting transportation as vehicular movement on various routes are getting disrupted. Although the temperature slightly increases during the day, the chill becomes more intense from midnight onwards.
Although the current cold is not severe and chilly winds may begin next week, lowering the district’s temperature in the coming days. The cold wave accompanied by dense fog will aggravate the situation by the end of December and biting cold wave may continue spreading across the country.
Common people living in the country’s char areas or near river banks will also be the worst sufferers. Besides, dense fog and strong cold wind will also intensify people’s sufferings in many ways.

On the other hand, there will be a sharp rise in the number of patients suffering from cold-related diseases across the region. The cold weather will lead to a rise in winter-related illnesses including colds, fevers, respiratory problems like pneumonia and diarrhea with hospitals seeing more patients daily. Experts say that a sudden drop in temperature from hot to cold can be harmful to the human body and especially for people who have chronic cold-related problems. We have also noticed, most of the government hospitals and health complexes struggle to cope with the situation due to shortage of manpower and accommodation during the winter seaon. Besides, the falling temperature will also forcing north people to stay indoors from afternoon while businesses will be being hampered. Physicians have already warned that the number of patients, especially children and the elderly suffering from cold-related ailments like, respiratory, pneumonia, and diarrhoea, thronging to hospitals might increase in the coming days.
With deteriorating chilling condition due to cold wave, the local administration will also have to start distributing warm clothes among the distressed people to mitigate their sufferings immediately.
Besides, blankets will also have to be distributed to the cold-hit distressed and poor people under the direct supervision of upazila administration and local government bodies including social organisations.
Apart from the government, the well- off sections of the society and different socio-economic organisations of the country will also have to stay beside the cold-affected people with the mentality to distribute warm clothes to them as part of social responsibility.
The affluent people must think there is no alternative to their activities to become good people with good character for standing beside the suffering humanity. It should be our moral responsibility to stay beside the distressed people in every disaster and crisis period.
Some people are buying warm clothes while the low-income group such as day labours, workers, peasants and floating people are getting worried. To keep common people’s livelihood active, the government and the affluent people have to come forward with relief and warm clothes in this regard as early as possible.
