The Chattogram Port Authority and the Bangladesh Navy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly conduct hydrographic activities in the Karnaphuli Navigational Channel and outer anchorage areas of Chattogram Port.
The agreement was formalised at the Port Authority's boardroom on Monday. In the presence of Port Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, the MoU was signed by the Member (Harbour and Marine) on behalf of the Port Authority and the Chief Hydrographer representing the Bangladesh Navy.
Officials stated that the agreement will enhance national maritime security, coastal management, and navigational efficiency through collaborative efforts. With the increasing scale of operations at Chattogram Port, the Hydrography Department’s responsibilities have grown significantly. The MoU will facilitate joint monitoring and surveys in key areas including dredging, coastal development, ecosystem and coastal zone management, and navigational safety.
The Bangladesh Navy’s Hydrography Department already contributes to international hydrographic efforts, including the publication of globally recognised charts. Their expertise, combined with the Port Authority’s technical capabilities, is expected to strengthen hydrographic surveys, data sharing, technical support, and training initiatives.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman emphasised that the MoU should not remain a formality but be implemented through meaningful cooperation and exchange of knowledge and technology in the national interest.
The signing of this agreement is viewed as a significant step towards improved shipping management and coastal security, and is expected to serve as a milestone in Bangladesh’s maritime development.
