A man facing at least eight criminal cases was shot and hacked to death in Narsingdi town’s Purbobrahmandi area on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Rezvi, 35, son of Joynal Abedin from the Birpur area of the town. He reportedly ran an internet and cable TV business in Hasanabad area of Raipura upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station Emdadul Haque said Rezvi and his associates went to the Brahmandi area to carry out a planned attack on Tayeb and his family. But Rezvi came under counterattack by Tayeb's group around 10:30pm, and he died on the spot.
“Rezvi was accused in at least eight cases, including robbery, abduction, arms possession and drug-related charges filed with different police stations,” the OC added.
Police recovered several crude bombs and locally-made weapons from the scene, the OC added.
Locals said tension erupted when Rezvi and his group attempted to attack Tayeb's family in the Purbobrahmandi area around 10:30pm.
A heated altercation escalated into violence, during which members of the rival group reportedly opened fire and hacked Rezvi to death before fleeing the scene.
