BSF kills 2 Bangladeshis in Thakurgaon, Sunamganj borders

Two Bangladeshis have been shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in separate incidents along the Sunamganj and Thakurgaon borders.

The shootings occurred at the Bangapara border in Sunamganjs Dowarabazar úpazila on Friday night, and at the Minapur border in Thakurgaon in the early hours of Saturday, according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials.

According to Sunamganj-28 BGB Commander Lt Col AKM Zakaria Qadir, a Bangladeshi was killed by BSF gunfire on Friday night while attempting to bring cows across the border from India illegally.

The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 45, a resident of Bhangapara village of Laxmipur union.

Citing relatives and the BGB, Dowarabazar Police Station chief Zahidul Haque said Shafiqul was part of a group of 10 to 12 people who illegally crossed into India to retrieve the cattle, prompting members of a BSF patrol team to open fire on them.

Meanwhile in Thakurgaon, Askar Ali, 24, son of Mohammad Kanu Ali and a resident of Jibanpur village under Haripur union, had crossed approximately 100 yards into Indian territory near the barbed-wire fence adjacent to main pillar no. 353 under Minapur Border Outpost (BOP) early Saturday. At that time, BSF personnel opened fire on him.

Locals found his body lying near the barbed-wire fence.

Haripur Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Mohammad Zakaria Mondol confirmed the incident.
