Farmers are harvesting Boro paddy with festivity as the yield is satisfactory in the country. As the harvesting season is set to begin in different districts including Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Naogaon, Bogura, Dinajpur, Sylhet, Habiganj, Maulvibazar, Sunamganj and the vast Barind tract of the country, the government has fixed the procurement price of rice and paddy.

The country-wide internal food grain procurement drive will begin from May 7 and it will continue till August 31 this year. Now, most of the farming fields have taken an eye-catching look as early varieties of paddy are now in ripening stages.

The paddy yield has created a high hope of supplementing the government’s efforts to ensure food security. The government will start purchasing Boro paddy from the marginal farmers directly at a fair price to avert any sort of irregularities in the agriculture sector.

In the upcoming season, five lakh tonnes of paddy, 11 lakh tonnes of parboiled rice, one lakh tonnes of non-parboiled Atap rice and 50,000 tonnes of wheat will also be procured.

Food grain procurement

drive will begin from May 7

The procurement price of per kilogram (Kg) paddy has been fixed at Taka 32 while per-kg par-boiled rice at Taka 45, per-kg non-parboiled rice or Atap at Taka 44 and Wheat at Taka 34. In 2023, the unit procurement price was fixed at Taka 30 for paddy, Taka 44 for parboiled rice and Taka 35 for wheat. We think such procurement system will help farmers to sell their paddy at fair prices without any harassments indulged in by middle-men.

Besides, the authorities concerned must take immediate action against the syndicate of unscrupulous millers and traders who are now active to manipulate the procurement of Boro paddy despite expecting a bumper production this year.

We have noticed over the past years when the paddy harvesting season begins, the middle-men and unscrupulous rice millers become active to gain through creating unfair situation. The officials and employees concerned should be careful so that no farmer would be subjected to any sort of harassment.

Country’s farmers will be very much happy as they believe that they will get excellent yield and fair price. So, they (farmers) will be encouraged to cultivate more Boro paddy next season.
