UNB, Sylhet: The body of a Bangladeshi youth was found hanging from a tree inside Indian territory along Utmachhara border in Sylhet’s Companiganj upazila on Thursday, triggering panic and concern in the border area.
The deceased was identified as Zakaria, 23, son of Alauddin of Lamagram village in North Ranikhai Union of Companiganj upazila.
Locals spotted the body hanging from a tree branch near Indian Pillar 1257, close to the main border pillar, early Thursday morning, Lt Col Nazmul Haque, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion 48.
"We have advised the family to file a general diary (GD). Whether it was suicide or a case of murder is a matter of investigation," he said.
BGB has contacted India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to investigate the matter and make arrangements to bring the body back, he added.
Companiganj Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Uzair Al Mahmud said, “The youth apparently died by suicide. We have discussed the matter with the commander of BGB’s Utmachhara camp. Once the victim’s family files a GD, BGB and police will coordinate to recover the body.”
As the incident occurred on the other side of the border it will take more time in retrieving the body, the OC added.
