BAF fighter training jet crashes in Ctg, pilot killed

Squadron Leader Asim Jawad, one of the two pilots who were injured when a fighter training aircraft of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) crashed in Patenga area on Thursday morning, died at BNS Patenga Hospital in the afternoon noon. 

"Pilot Asim Jawad passed away around 12:30 pm while undergoing treatment at BNS Issa Khan 

Hospital in Patenga," Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Port Division Deputy Commissioner Shakila Sultana told the media.

The injured pilot is Wing Commander Sohan. 

"The YAK130 training aircraft of the air force crashed in Patenga area around 11 am due to mechanical glitch and two pilots on board managed to eject from the aircraft through parachutes. They were rescued and taken to hospital," said Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a press release earlier. 

Divers, fire fighters, sailors of different ships stationed at the river port were working to find out the wreckage of the crashed plane.

Duty Officer of Patenga Police Station Nurul Islam also confirmed the incident, saying the pilots were rescued.

An Air Force source said the training aircraft that crashed into the Karnaphuli River near the Chittagong Boat Club, was not from the Chattogram unit of the Air Force.

Previously in June 2015, an F-7 fighter aircraft of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) crashed into the sea after taking off from the BAF Base Zahurul Haque. Missing pilot Flight Lieutenant Tahmid could not be found.

On 10 October 2011, a fighter plane of Bangladesh Air Force crashed into Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram. Flight Lt Muntasin managed to eject from the plane.

On 23 September 2010, a BAF fighter jet crashed into the Karnaphuli River near Patenga Boat Club. Pilot Flight Lieutenant Ahmed Sanjid escaped by ejecting.

Probe committee formed to investigate BAF fighter jet crash in Ctg

UNB adds: a high-level probe committee has been formed over the crash of the training fighter jet of the BAF into the Karnaphuli river in Chattogram on Thursday morning that left a pilot dead.

The probe body was formed as per the order of the Air Force chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan, according to the Inter-Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR).

Earlier, a pilot died and another was injured after a BAF training fighter jet crashed into the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram around 10:25am.

The pilot, Mohammad Asim Jawad, breathed his last around 12:30 pm while undergoing treatment at BNS Issa Khan Hospital in Patenga.

The injured pilot is Wing Commander Md Sohan Hasan Khan.

A rescue operation is on to retrieve the aircraft, ISPR said.

Assistant Chief of Air Force (Planning) Air Vice Marshal Mu Kamrul Islam reached the spot from Dhaka and gave necessary directions to all those involved in the rescue operation.

Air Commander Air Vice Marshal AKM Shafiul Azam of Air Force Base Zahurul Haque is supervising the post-accident operations.

Meanwhile, Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of pilot Asim Jawad.
