Several Awami League supporters were beaten up by BNP supporters and later handed over to police when they tried to gather at Dhanmondi-32 on Friday to pay tribute on the death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
BNP activists, who had taken position in the area since morning, resisted anyone attempting to lay flowers or offer respects at the site, where Mujibur Rahman's residence once stood.
The house was largely destroyed after Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the face of mass protests last year, but the location still draws Awami League supporters on special occasions.
Witnesses said a man was attacked on suspicion of being an Awami League member. BNP activists also detained several others suspected of supporting the former ruling party and handed them over to the police.
