A group of villagers at village Satgachhi in Shailkupa municipality of Jhenadah had killed a kid of a fish cat (mechhobagh) on Thursday noon. Later the villagers enjoy the matter carrying the body throughout the village.
Locals said a kid of a fish cat sustained injury when a farmer was harvesting his paddy of a plot on Thursday noon at the village. The villagers were enjoying the moment to catch the same. At one stage the minor kid became annoyed and tried to chase the villagers. The villagers then started beating up the kid and it had died on the spot. Later they paraded the village with the body.
A local newsman Jafrul Islam Shimul said he rushed the spot hearing nabbing the fish cat kid but it was killed earlier. The villagers were enjoying their “heroism” then, Jafrul Islam said.
Shailkupa upazila forest officer Moklesur Rahman when contacted over cellular phone said he was staying Gazipur for his official work in the court. He had already advised one of his office colleague to visit the spot and report him immediately.
Eminent environmentalist and human rights activists Sujan Biplab Advocate reacting on the killing of a fish cat by the villagers with said agitation said huge crocodiles, shushuk, guishap, fish cat, wild cat and other beats and lives were the victim of killing by the people in Shailkupa of Jhenaidah in recent days. He said no late up was visible from the local administration to stop this nuisance activities of the people. Legal steps might check this illegal killing of the beats and wild lives and animals, Sujan Biplab Advocate said.
