Nineteen students of Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) have been subjected to various disciplinary actions, including temporary and permanent expulsion from university dormitories and financial penalties, in connection with multiple incidents of ragging.
Additionally, two students have had their studentship permanently revoked for their roles in physically and mentally harassing junior students.
Khalilur Rahman, senior deputy director of the university's Public Relations and Publications Department, confirmed the matter through a press release issued recently.
These punitive measures were taken against the students according to the level of disciplinary violation at the 13th meeting of the Students' Discipline Committee held on June 29 afternoon at the conference room of the university's administrative building under the chairmanship of CVASU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Lutfur Rahman.
Mirza Mahfuz Hasan Akash, a second-year student of the same faculty, has been permanently expelled from the university hall and fined Tk 10,000 for physically and mentally abusing a first-year student of the 2023-2024 academic year of the Faculty of Food Science and Technology of the university. Md. Jaber has been expelled from the university hall for one year and fined Tk 5,000, and Md. Rashid Shabab Shuvo, Tanjim Md. Siam Iqbal and Md. Mehedi Hasan have been expelled from the university hall for six months and fined Tk 3,000 each.
In the meeting, Md. Touhidul Islam Shihab, a 2nd year student of the Faculty of Fisheries, was permanently expelled from the university hall and fined Tk 10,000, Md. Sajeed-ul-Islam Sifat was expelled from the hall for six months and fined Tk 5,000, and Md. Shahedul Islam was expelled from the hall for six months and fined Tk 3,000 for indiscipline and physical and mental abuse of eight newly admitted students of the 2023-2024 academic year.
In the same incident, second-year students of the Faculty of Fisheries Sifat Ullah Jilan, Md. Mostakim Hossain Riyad, Asif Al Hasan, Md. Ilyas Al Jaber, Taidul Islam Topu, Md. Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Nazmus Sadat Touhid, Abul Hasan Fahat, Md. Shahrukh Khan and Md. Belal Hossain were expelled from the university hall for six months and given warning notices. In addition, second-year student of the Faculty of Fisheries Md. Riazul Jannah Wasi was banned from entering the university hall for life.
It is noteworthy that the studentship of MS students Abhishek Nandi (Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology) and Md. Ashiqul Islam Rana (Department of Animal Science and Nutrition) was cancelled at the 11th meeting of the Students' Discipline Committee held on March 18 this year for misconduct in the case of physically assaulting a student on the night of August 1, 2024 in room 418 of the university's freedom fighter Abdullah Al Noman Hall and attacking and injuring another student in the TV room on the night of November 19, and for not responding to the show cause notice. It was decided that they will not get the opportunity to pursue any higher education from this university in the future.
