10-km gridlock on Dhaka-Ctg highway causing suffering to commuters

A severe traffic congestion has plagued nearly a 10-kilometer stretch of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sonargaon area of Narayanganj, causing extreme suffering for passengers and drivers alike.

The traffic jam began around 8 AM on Thursday and continued until about 1:15 PM.

The gridlock affected both lanes from Kanchpur through Madanpur to Mograpara crossroads. The Sonargaon section of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway also faced similar traffic delays.

According to Kanchpur Highway Police, the congestion was caused by potholes on the road, slowing down vehicle movement. Traffic flow has now returned to normal.

Ali Hossain Mahmud, a passenger traveling from Kanchpur to Mograpara, said, “After boarding a small bus at Kanchpur, I was stuck near Kanchpur BISIC area for almost an hour. It took nearly two hours to reach Langolband where the road conditions improved, allowing me to finally reach my destination. Still, there is congestion on both sides.”

Another passenger, Saddam Mia Jony, said, “Severe traffic jams have formed on both lanes. We boarded a vehicle to go to Mograpara, but we are still stuck near Kanchpur.”

Jabbar Mia, a water trader traveling from Tarabo in Rupganj to Chattogram Road, said he was stuck sitting on a bus at Kanchpur for one and a half hours—a journey that normally takes 15-20 minutes.

Kanchpur Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Abdul Qader Jilani explained, “The traffic jam at various points on the highway is due to potholes. I have been communicating with the Road Department officials for the past three days requesting repairs, but have received no response yet. Currently, traffic on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway has normalized, but congestion remains on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. We are on-site trying to restore normal flow.”
